What is SFX?

About SFX

SFX works behind the scenes to allow the creation and maintainance of links on online resources such as journals and databases. This enables users to connect to articles they need to do their research. Without SFX users would have to spend much more time locating the information they need.

The public face of SFX is the AtoZ list. The AtoZ list displays data from the SFX knowledgebase. Combined with the FindIt button, which links directly to the AtoZ list from the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)he local Electronic Journal Locator (EJL) and a large number of databases, it is even easier for users to locate and use the online content available to them.

SFX can also be used to check access to online resources form inside the software.

SFX is an OpenURL link resolver produced by Ex Libris Ltd. SFX was the first OpenURL link resolver.

Between 1998 and 2000 a group of Belgian librarians at Ghent University lead by Herbert van de Sompel and Patrick Hochstenbach developed OpenURL. SFX (Special Effects) was designed and implemented as software to use with OpenURL.

Ex Libris Ltd acquired the SFX software in 2000. SFX was re-engineered by ExLibris and is now used by more than 1500 libraries worldwide.
